As a church family, we are committing to reading the Bible in a year. Start your journey with the Take Heart, Again Journal. Featuring the SOAR method, this journal is designed to help you build a daily habit of engaging with scripture and prayer. Discover a simple yet impactful approach to deepen your faith and grow spiritually over 365 days.

Please note: this Bible Reading plan requires a Bible that includes the Apocrypha. We recommend The People's Bible (Fortress Press).

CREATING A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE WITH THE TAKE HEART, AGAIN JOURNAL

Welcome to 365 days of growing in faith through scripture and prayer. This journal is a tool to support your spiritual formation as a family member of First Church Miami. The SOAR Method offers a simple and thoughtful way to engage the Bible. May this journal support you in deepening your connection with God and living more fully into love, justice, and hope—one moment with God at a time. 
1. Create Space
Start by inviting God into this time. Ask for openness, wisdom, and honesty as you read. There is no need for perfect words, just a willing heart. It may be helpful to create or find a space where you can focus.

2. Read the Assigned Scripture
Read the daily passage slowly in the NRSV translation. You may read silently, aloud, or listen using an audio Bible. Notice what draws your attention, challenges you, or brings comfort. Trust that God can speak through what stands out, and your body is a living archive holding all that God is mindful of regarding you.

3. The SOAR Method
This journal guides you through FCM’s SOAR method, designed to help scripture connect with everyday life. Feel free to use this method to the extent it is helpful.
SCRIPTURE - Write down a verse or short phrase that stands out to you. It may feel encouraging, confusing, or challenging.

OBSERVATION - Reflect on what is happening in the text. What do you notice about God, people, or the situation? Are there themes of justice, hope, struggle, unethical living, or renewal?

APPLICATION - Consider how this passage speaks to your life today. What invitation, challenge, or reminder do you hear? How might this shape your actions, relationships, or perspective?

REFLECTION - Take a moment to reflect honestly. Write a brief response—this may be a prayer, a question, gratitude, or a thought you want to carry with you for the day.
4. Stay Consistent and Practice Grace
Aim for daily engagement, but give yourself grace. If you miss a day, begin again. Split days into two if that is helpful. This journey is about faithfulness, not perfection.

5. Reflect Over Time
Return to your past entries from time to time. Notice patterns, growth, and where God has been present. Reflection helps us see how scripture continues to form us over time.

Intro: Who is This For & Why Reading the Bible is Important
This reading plan is for everyone. No prior knowledge is required, and no educational background is too limited. New readers and lifelong Christians;  white, black, and brown folks; Queers and cis-gender heteros; the working-poor and the wealthy; those displaced and unhoused; the refugee and migrant; youth and adults, bodies of all abilities —all are invited to come with openness and honesty, trusting that God meets us in daily practice and shapes us into people of justice, love, and hope.

Why Reading the Bible is Important
At First Church Miami, reading the Bible is not about having all the answers but about spiritual formation—allowing scripture to shape how we live, love, and see the world. The Bible tells the long story of God’s relationship with humanity, marked by struggle, justice, failure, and renewal. Through regular, prayerful reading, we grow in faith, deepen our connection with God, and learn to live with greater compassion and purpose.

This 365-day journey invites us into a shared rhythm of scripture and prayer. Some passages will inspire us; others may challenge or confuse us. All of it is part of growing together in faith. You are encouraged to share your experience while reading through the Bible with your church family. The Bible is always better together.
Intro: The Bible We Use at First Church Miami
First Church uses the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) of the Bible. The NRSV is known for its accuracy in Biblical language translation, inclusive language, and wide use in churches and academic settings, helping us to read scripture carefully and thoughtfully.

Participants are encouraged to use The People’s Bible (Fortress Press, 2008), as it includes helpful introductions to each book, historical and cultural context, and the Apocrypha. This resource also reflects perspectives that align with FCM’s liberation theology and progressive identity, centering voices often left out of traditional interpretations.

We also encourage the use of Bible apps, audio Bibles, and digital reading tools, which can make daily reading more accessible and flexible. Please note, however, that not all Bibles or apps include the Apocrypha, which is necessary to fully complete this reading plan. When choosing a print or digital Bible, try to ensure it includes books like  Tobit, Judith, and the Maccabees.

Intro: The Apocrypha and Why It Matters
The Apocrypha is a collection of Jewish writings written between the Old and New Testaments, like Tobit, Judith, and the Maccabees. These books are not always recognized by the Protestant church, but they tell stories of faith, courage, wisdom, resistance, and hope during times of oppression. Reading them helps us better understand the world of Jesus directly before his birth & ministry and the spiritual struggles of earlier communities. They too remind us that God has always spoken through people on the margins and in difficult times.
Intro: Reading the Bible Chronologically
Most Bibles are arranged by the type of writing of each book, not by the order events happened. This plan is chronological, allowing us to follow the Bible as one unfolding story as close to possible as the actual order of events. Reading this way helps us see connections between history, prophecy, prayer, and teaching. Throughout the year, the plan also includes daily readings of the Books of Wisdom—such as Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Sirach. These writings help us reflect on daily life, emotions, relationships, and faithful living.
